In this piece I spent only a few moments looking at my subject before I knew what I wanted to bring out. The subject was a retired Valpo professor, Stanley. While I examined Stanley sitting there I noticed how he held himself; confident but also tired, wise but also tender. I sense all of the wondrous things he must have encountered and seen through his many years, and I could imagine how they affected him now. Among all of these things I also saw exhaustion. I saw the toll years can take on a person, but this did not deconstruct the image he put forth, instead it only strengthened. He instead seemed full of power, and knowledge, and energy. It was through this overwhelming scene that I gained my inspiration. Stanley was not only the retired aging professor before me, but also a vault of experiences with secrets that still needed to be unlocked. The magic within him was struggling to get out, which only in this state of serene comfort could escape.
